Biography

Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, and political activist born on October 15 1938 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He studied music at the Trinity College of Music in London and returned to Nigeria where he pioneered Afrobeat, a genre blending traditional Yoruba music, jazz, funk, and highlife into a powerful vehicle for social commentary. His band Africa 70 and later Egypt 80 became renowned across Africa and beyond. Fela released landmark albums including Zombie (1977), Sorrow Tears and Blood (1977), Coffin for Head of State (1981), and Beast of No Nation (1989). He established the Afrika Shrine in Lagos as a cultural and political hub, and founded the Kalakuta Republic commune as a declared independent state. His music was a direct indictment of military corruption and oppression in Nigeria, leading to his arrest on dozens of occasions and a devastating 1977 raid by soldiers who killed his mother Funmilayo by throwing her from a window. Fela died on August 2 1997 from AIDS-related complications. His influence on global music is immeasurable, with artists from across the world citing him as a primary inspiration. The Broadway musical Fela! ran from 2009 to 2011, bringing his story to international audiences. His sons Femi and Seun Kuti continue his legacy, and his music remains a defining force in pan-African cultural identity and political resistance.
