Biography
Mathangi Arulpragasam, known professionally as M.I.A., is a British-Sri Lankan rapper, singer, songwriter, and activist born on July 18, 1975, in London, England, to Sri Lankan Tamil parents. Her politically charged music fuses hip-hop, electronic, and world music influences drawn from her experience as a refugee during the Sri Lankan Civil War. She achieved global recognition with the 2007 single "Paper Planes" and in 2009 became the first artist of Sri Lankan-British descent to receive Academy Award and Grammy Award nominations in the same year.
