Plantashun Boiz
Biography
Plantashun Boiz was a pioneering Nigerian R&B and hip-hop group formed in Lagos around 2000, comprising three vocalists who would each go on to major solo careers: 2Baba (Innocent Idibia), Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo), and Faze (Chibuzor Oji). The group emerged at a pivotal moment when Nigerian pop music was searching for a new sound beyond traditional Jùjú and Highlife, and their smooth vocal harmonies, contemporary beats, and English-language R&B sound represented a generational shift in Nigerian pop. The group released two critically acclaimed albums, Body and Soul (2000) and H2O (2003), which produced beloved tracks including E Be Like Say, Who Am I, and Nothing Come Easy. Their music drew heavily from late 1990s American R&B but incorporated distinctly Nigerian lyrical content and vocal sensibilities, creating a template that subsequent generations of Nigerian artists would build upon. They were among the first Nigerian acts to achieve wide regional popularity across West Africa with a distinctly modern pop sound. The group disbanded in 2004 as each member pursued solo ambitions, with 2Baba going on to become the biggest African pop star of his generation. The separation was not without friction, particularly between 2Baba and Blackface, who engaged in a long-running public dispute over songwriting credits. Despite the acrimonious split, Plantashun Boiz are unanimously celebrated as architects of modern Nigerian pop music and a crucial bridge between traditional Nigerian sounds and the global Afrobeats explosion that followed.
