Biography

Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, born February 7 1948 in Lagos State, was the undisputed father of Fuji music, a genre he essentially created by blending Islamic Ajisari devotional music with Yoruba social music and popular percussion styles. Born Sikiru Ayinde Balogun, he adopted the stage name Barrister — a title that reflected both his sharp mind and authoritative stage presence. He began recording in the early 1970s and by the 1980s had established Fuji as one of Nigeria's most commercially dominant musical genres. His prolific output over four decades included landmark albums such as Fuji Garbage (1972), Fuji Extravaganza (1980), and Positive Mind (1994). His rivalry with fellow Fuji legend Kollington Ayinla defined Nigerian popular music through the late 1970s and 1980s, with both artists pushing the genre to new creative heights through competitive one-upmanship. Barrister's music was characterised by rapid-fire Yoruba poetry, dense polyrhythmic percussion, and an ability to address both celebratory and serious themes. The Federal Government of Nigeria awarded him the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR), and he received honorary doctorates from several Nigerian universities in recognition of his immense cultural contributions. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister died on July 16 2010 in Lagos after a prolonged illness. His passing marked the end of an era, but Fuji music continues to thrive as one of Nigeria's most popular indigenous musical genres, carrying his foundational vision forward.
