Sir Shina Peters
Biography
Sir Shina Peters is a Nigerian musician born on June 22 1958 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, who created one of the most explosive commercial moments in Nigerian music history with the release of his debut album Afro-Juju Series 1 in 1989. A veteran guitarist who had played as a session musician for Ebenezer Obey's Inter-Reformers band in the 1970s and 1980s, Peters burst onto the national scene as a solo act with a sound he dubbed Afro-Juju, a high-energy fusion of Jùjú rhythms with modern pop production. Afro-Juju Series 1 produced the massive hit Ace and became the best-selling album in Nigerian history at the time of its release, shattering sales records and dominating radio airplay for years. The follow-up Afro-Juju Series 2 (1990) and subsequent albums confirmed Peters as a consistent force in Nigerian music. His energetic performances, flamboyant showmanship, and sophisticated band arrangements made him one of the most exciting live acts in the country throughout the 1990s. Sir Shina Peters received the Nigerian national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his contributions to Nigerian culture. He was awarded the title Sir by his home state government and continues to perform actively, bringing his electrifying Afro-Juju sound to audiences who revere his music as a peak moment of Nigerian popular culture. His work helped bridge the gap between traditional Jùjú and contemporary popular music, influencing a generation of Nigerian musicians.
