Biography
Tekno, born Augustine Miles Kelechi on December 17 1992 in Bauchi State, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer who achieved massive commercial success in the mid-2010s with a string of danceable, groove-heavy Afrobeats singles that dominated Nigerian radio and clubs. He moved to Lagos to pursue music and was signed to K-Money Entertainment before releasing music under various label arrangements. His production skills gave his recordings a distinctive sonic quality that helped establish a new direction for mid-tempo Afrobeats. His breakthrough came with the 2015 single Duro, followed by the massive 2016 hit Pana which became one of the most played Nigerian songs of the year and earned him international recognition. The follow-up Yawa (2016) and subsequent singles cemented his position as one of Nigeria's most commercially reliable artists. He also built a reputation as a sought-after producer, working with Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and other leading lights of Afrobeats on production and songwriting credits that have accumulated into a significant industry legacy. Tekno won multiple Headies Awards and MTV Africa Music Awards and performed at major international venues and festivals. He founded his own label Cartel Music Africa and has continued releasing music through the late 2010s and into the 2020s, though with a lower profile than during his commercial peak. His contribution to the mid-2010s Afrobeats golden era as both an artist and producer represents a significant and lasting body of work.
