Terry G
Biography
Terry G, born Gabriel Oche Amanyi, is a Nigerian singer and music producer born in Lagos State who became one of the most uniquely expressive and unconventional voices in Nigerian street pop during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Known for his wild stage persona, free-spirited lyrics, and eccentricity that earned him the nickname Free Me (after his breakthrough hit), he developed a cult following that celebrated his deliberate embrace of outsider aesthetics and unfiltered self-expression. His breakthrough came with the 2009 single Free Me, which became a massive street hit and turned his catchphrase-laden style into a national phenomenon. The follow-up hit Akpako Master and several other singles confirmed him as a force in street music. His music is characterised by Pidgin English lyrics, raw energy, dense slang, and production that blends highlife percussion with electronic sounds in ways that felt completely original. He released the album Am I Mad? (2010) to considerable commercial success. Terry G has maintained an active recording and performing career throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, periodically releasing music that renews interest in his distinctive style. He is regarded as a cult figure in Nigerian popular culture, celebrated not only for his music but for his entertainingly unpredictable public persona. His influence can be felt in the next generation of Nigerian street pop artists who drew on his willingness to be unconventional and uncompromising in an industry that often rewards conformity.
