Biography
Bella Shmurda, born Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed in Lagos State, is a Nigerian singer who emerged from the streets of Lagos to become one of the defining voices of the early 2020s Lagos street pop movement. He attended the University of Lagos and began his music career independently, releasing music that reflected the lived realities of young Nigerians navigating poverty, ambition, and survival in a megacity with tremendous inequality. His music draws on Yoruba oral traditions, Pidgin English street slang, and Afrobeats production in ways that feel genuinely rooted in Lagos street culture. His breakthrough came with the 2019 single Cash App, which became a viral street anthem and earned him massive organic support across Nigerian social media platforms. The 2020 hit Vision 2020 featuring Zlatan and Omah Lay became one of the most celebrated street pop collaborations of the year and demonstrated his ability to hold his own alongside more established acts. He signed to various label deals and continued releasing music that maintained his street authenticity while expanding his commercial reach. Bella Shmurda has won multiple Nigerian awards and continues to be celebrated as an authentic voice for the street experience in Lagos.
