Biography
Onyeka Onwenu, born January 31 1952 in Lagos State, is a celebrated Nigerian singer, actress, and filmmaker who became one of the most distinctive voices in Nigerian popular music during the 1980s. Educated at Wellesley College in the United States, she returned to Nigeria and launched a multifaceted career in entertainment and journalism before releasing her debut album Endless Life in 1981. Her music combined Afropop sensibilities with thoughtful lyrics rooted in Nigerian cultural identity and social commentary. Her landmark 1984 album Mirrors became a critical and commercial success, producing the hit Bia Nulo and establishing her as a sophisticated artist with a strong literary sensibility. Her 1986 duet with King Sunny Adé, Wait for Me, was a rare and celebrated crossover between the Afropop and Jùjú worlds. Onwenu performed at the 1986 FESPAC African arts festival in Cairo and appeared on international stages across Europe and North America, serving as a cultural ambassador for Nigeria. Beyond music, Onwenu has been equally prominent as an actress, filmmaker, and public intellectual. She served as Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development and has been a vocal advocate for women's rights and child welfare in Nigeria. She was honoured with the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) national award and received honorary doctorates from Nigerian universities. Her 2020 memoir My Father's Daughter provided a deeply personal account of her life in Nigerian public culture.
