Biography
Dr. SID, born Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf in Lagos State, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who was part of the celebrated Mo'Hits Records roster in the late 2000s. A trained physician who chose music over medicine, he brought a polished, cosmopolitan sensibility to Nigerian pop and distinguished himself with his smooth vocal style and his ability to craft radio-friendly Afropop with crossover appeal. His debut single Surulere in 2008 was an immediate hit and introduced him as a sophisticated new voice in Nigerian music. His debut album who is Dr. Sid (2011) was produced primarily by Don Jazzy and contained a string of well-crafted singles that demonstrated his range across Afropop and R&B. His collaboration with Olu Maintain on the track Naughty became one of the biggest songs of 2009. He maintained his profile through the transition from Mo'Hits to the wider industry, releasing music independently and through various partnerships in the years following the label's dissolution in 2012. Dr. SID has remained active in Nigerian music and entertainment, expanding into television presenting and entertainment entrepreneurship. He runs his own record label and has mentored younger artists.
