Naira Marley
Biography
Naira Marley, born Azeez Adeshina Fashola on May 10 1994 in Agege, Lagos State, is a Nigerian singer and founder of the Marlian Music record label who became one of the most commercially dominant and culturally controversial figures in Nigerian street pop. He grew up partly in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria, and his music draws on a hybrid of Lagos street culture, UK grime influences, and Afrobeats, delivered primarily in Yoruba, Pidgin English, and English. His self-styled Marlian philosophy — embracing perceived rule-breaking and freedom from convention — resonated enormously with Nigerian youth. His 2019 singles Am I a Yahoo Boy and Soapy generated enormous controversy and discussion. Am I a Yahoo Boy was seen by some as celebrating internet fraud, while Soapy attracted criticism for its lyrical content, but both became massive street hits that demonstrated the commercial power of provocative, taboo-adjacent content in the Nigerian market. He was arrested by the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2019 on fraud-related charges, which paradoxically increased his profile. He was subsequently released and acquitted. Naira Marley founded Marlian Music and signed several artists including Zinoleesky, Mohbad, Lil Smart, and C Blvck. The label became associated with street pop in the early 2020s. Following the tragic death of his former signee Mohbad in 2023, Naira Marley faced significant public criticism and scrutiny over allegations concerning the circumstances of Mohbad's final years. He has maintained his recording career and fan following despite this controversy. His commercial impact on Nigerian street music remains significant.
